Bulgaria and Macedonia signed a Memorandum for coupling Day Ahead Markets

The Memorandum was signed under the auspices of WB6 Energy Connectivity Initiative. The process of coupling is expected to be competed by the second quarter of 2019.

Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Electricity Transmission System Operator of Macedonia, Energy Regulatory Commission of Macedonia and the Electricity System Operator of Bulgaria. The Memorandum forms the basis for coupling the “Day Ahead Markets” of the two countries. The Memorandum is expected to be signed also by the Bulgarian Energy and Water Regulatory Commission.

The Memorandum was signed during the first stakeholders’ meeting on 12, April, 2018 in Sofia. Representatives of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy, Macedonia’s Ministry of Economy and EWRC reps took active part in the event. In addition, the Energy Community Secretariat and the consultancy consortium which supports the project also participated.

Signing the Memorandum, the Bulgarian and the Macedonian representatives committed to organize a project “kick off” meeting within 30 days from the date of signing the Memorandum. The main project stages, the project implementation schedule, as well as the structure and the composition of the working groups on the project will be determined at that meeting. The process of market coupling between the two countries is facilitated under the Western Balkan 6 energy market connectivity programme, implemented by the Energy Community Secretariat and funded by the European Commission.
