Disturbed environmental balance in the Lim river in Serbia
, NewsThe responsibility for the environmental problem of the Prijepolje landfill in the Lim river is not only on the individuals, but also on the authorities who should manage the waste. The environmental balance has long been disturbed in the Lim river because a lot of waste has accumulated there, which now creates an environmental bomb.
Seen from a height, nature is breath-taking but an environmental catastrophe from a boat. For years, the Potpećko Lake, which used to be a paradise for bathers, has been polluted. Environmentalists promise that they will soon install a cable with the help of which it will be easier to remove waste coming from five Montenegrin municipalities and Prijepolje.
Siniša Laković from the environmental association “Jastreb” from Priboj believes that the dumping of garbage on the coast of Lim should be banned. That would be the only permanent solution.
According to him, Priboj is endangered because it is the last municipality in Serbia through which Lim flows. Everything that is thrown into the river reaches that city.
“We are aware that this is not a permanent solution, but it is a better solution than it is now,” says Laković.
The Prijepolje landfill is an environmental bomb. Another, somewhat smaller, is next to Lim and on the territory of the Priboj municipality.
At the city landfill “Duboko” in Druglići, waste from Priboj and the neighbouring municipality of Nova Varoš is disposed of. Although this garbage does not end up in Lim, there are daily fires and smoke is spreading. That is why the residents call the landfill the “Gate of Hell”.
Irresponsible behaviour with waste distances Serbia from the European path.
“That whole 27th chapter is so far from people and local governments that do not have the resources without the help of the ministry, the state, the European Union and the networked tripartite of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, to solve this problem,” said Goran Reković from Citizens’ associations “Primus” from Priboj.
As a possible solution, a project for the construction of a regional landfill was prepared a long time ago, but it is hampered by the incompetence of three municipalities and the competent ministry, says the first man of Priboj.
“You have ‘Stanjevina’ and you have an unresolved issue of the company that should manage the regional sanitary landfill. You have the ignorance of the ministry. When municipalities are not capable, you obviously see that they are not capable of running such a significant project. It is the duty and obligation of the ministry to work. They roughly liked to take pictures, to make some projects that have nothing to do with the essence “, says Lazar Rvović, the president of the municipality of Priboj.
Citizens would also like to bathe in Lim, as they used to, but because of everything that water brings, all they can is take pictures on the shore.
