Energy Financing Team won a tender for constructing and operating a SPP in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The tender for constructing and operating of a 60-megawatt (MW) capacity solar power plant was launched in March. Power trader and operator Energy Financing Team (EFT) had won a tender to build and operate for 50 years a SPP in Bosnia, expanding its presence in the Balkan country. A contract should be signed with the Energy Ministry of Bosnia’s autonomous Serb Republic in mid-July, EFT’s spokeswoman told Reuters.

The Serb Republic is aiming to add 1,000 MW of renewable energy sources by 2029 as it reduces its use of coal, which accounts for more than 60% of Bosnia’s power, as part of Bosnia’s aspirations to join the European Union.

The solar power plant, located near the southeastern town of Bileca, is expected to cost 85 million Bosnian marka ($47.7 million). It will have annual output of 84 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity to be sold on the open market and should start commercial operation in 2023. EFT already operates a 300 MW Stanari coal-fired power plant, near the northern town of Doboj, the first privately-funded power plant in the Western Balkans, which came online in 2016.

It is also pursuing the construction of 35 MW Ulog hydro power plant on the Neretva river. The plant, worth 150 million Bosnian marka, is also expected to be online in the second half of 2023. In contrast to other Balkan countries that rely on power imports, Bosnia is able to export power because of its hydro capacity.
