New RES goal for Romania is 38% by 2030

Given that the European Commission’s “fit for 55” package will be adopted in the form in which it was proposed, the target for renewable energy in Romania for 2030 will increase significantly – from 30.7% to 38%. One of the measures in the package announced by the European Commission is to increase the share of energy from renewable sources to 40% in final energy consumption in the entire European Union by 2030, which means raising targets for all member states, taking into account their specifics.

According to the European Commission’s proposal, the new renewable energy target for Romania is 38% in 2030, well above the current target. The National Integrated Energy and Environment Plan (PNIESC), developed by Wada in Bucharest, envisages a renewable energy target of 30% in 2030, compared to 24% in 2020.

To achieve the 30.7% target, Romania needs to install new renewable capacity of about 6,900 MW.
However, Brussels has already asked Romania to increase this target, which would correspond to the country’s potential, and a 34% share has been discussed.

Currently, Romania has installed wind capacities of 3,000 MW, photovoltaic capacity of 1,400 MW and biomass and biogas plants with a capacity of 126 MW.

According to ANRE data, in 2020, wind energy provided 13.6% of the national electricity production, photovoltaic power plants 1.5%, and hydro power plants 29%.
