Serbia falls behind Europe mostly in the area of environment protection
, NewsA debate called “Environmental protection – land, water, air” was organized by a group of independent media. Participants agreed that the state’s investment in environmental protection is too small and that there is no area in which Serbia lags more behind the region and the rest of Europe than environment.
Among other things, Serbia lacks modern landfills, 10,000 kilometers of sewage network, 350 water treatment plants, filters to prevent excess emissions of thermal power plants.
The Fiscal Council says more than € 8.5 billion needs to be invested in the next 10 to 15 years to see concrete results and that it is not true that the state does not have that money.
“This means that the highest level of decision-making is needed to make the environment a priority. This is not yet the case and what we have been seeing in recent months is more like a show than a serious commitment and a sign that things are changing,”said Vladimir Vuckovic from the Fiscal Council.
He added that environmental spending should be steadily increased.
“With the current € 150 to 200 million appropriations from the state and local budgets, this needs to be increased every year, at least to some 500 million in the next five years, and then more and more in the coming years, in order to slowly resolve these issues,” Vuckovic said .
