Serbia starts overhaul of ageing hydro power plant

, News

Serbian state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has started an overhaul of its Zvornik hydro power plant to boost its output by a third to 125.6 megawatts and extend its lifespan by 40 years, it said on Monday.

The modernisation will take four years – one year for each of the plant’s four turbines, said EPS, adding that the revamp of one of the country’s oldest power plants would cost 70 million euros ($80 million).

The project will be financed by a loan from German state-owned development bank KfW, EPS said. Serbia produces 70 percent of its power from coal and the rest from hydro.
