Serbian energy minister says power plants not to blame for pollution

, News

Serbian Mining and Energy Minister Aleksandar Antic denied claims that the country’s thermal power plants were to blame for the latest wave of air pollution.

“The thermal power plants did not contribute to the latest pollution,” Antic told TV Prva. He said that those plants do not have emissions of the particles that caused the recent drop in air quality because they have filters.

The minister recalled that 475 million Euro had been invested into installing those filters to prevent particle emissions. Antic said that another 500 million Euro are being invested to lower emissions of other toxic materials.

The minister said that 77 percent of heating plants in the country use natural gas which he said is a clean fuel.
