The growth of “green energy production” in Europe

In the first half of this year, two thirds of all electricity production came from low-carbon sources, and last year “green production” grew by 10 percent.

In the new Energy Barometer, the Association of European Electric Power Companies Eurelectric stated that the energy sector is successfully approaching the goal of decarbonization of the sector. It is concluded that carbon dioxide emissions in this sector are decreasing at a high rate, faster than expected, and the share of renewable energy sources is successfully increasing.

In the first half of the year, RES reached 40 percent of the energy mix, and the share of CO2 in production was lower by 18 percent. It should be emphasized that in 2010, renewables accounted for only 20 percent of the energy mix in electricity generation, while last year they reached 34 percent, or an average of 40 percent in the first half of 2020. If these trends continue and certain conditions are met, it would mean that by 2030, the share of low-emission sources in production could reach 80 percent.

The share of nuclear production, which was 26 percent in the first half of this year, will fall to 21 percent, and the share of RES (which was 40 percent in the first half of 2020) could increase to 60 percent.

Eurelectric points out that the decline in emissions has been present in the electricity sector for the last seven years, and a decline has also been recorded in industry, while emissions from transport have risen sharply.

According to Eurelectric estimates, in order to achieve a 60 percent share of RES in electricity production by 2030, the current capacity of wind farms should be almost doubled, and the capacity of solar power plants should be increased as much as 2.9 times.

The coronavirus epidemic is slowing down projects to build new power plants, build and maintain a network.

Interestingly, Eurelectric emphasizes that the legislative changes should discourage the growth of imports of cheaper electricity produced from fossil sources from third countries.
