Bulgaria’s coal-fired thermal power plants are coming out of capacity mechanism in 2025

The European Union’s Recovery and Sustainability Plan does not provide funds for coal-fired power plants in the Marica Basin, Bulgarian Energy Minister Temenushka Petkova told bTV. She pointed out that the money within this line will be mainly directed to green projects.

The fund for the realization of the plan consists of a grant of 12 billion levs (6.14 billion euros) and up to 9 billion levs (4.6 billion euros) which will be provided from the loan, while the largest amount is intended for the “Green Bulgaria” campaign – 4, 5 billion levs (2.3 billion euros). Most of the money is intended for the realization of energy efficiency measures, Petkova explained.

Renovation and modernization of residential and administrative buildings, as well as industrial buildings, is planned to reduce the energy intensity of the Bulgarian economy. For that purpose, in the coming years, in accordance with the plan, 3 billion levs (1.53 billion euros) will be allocated. Also, street lighting replacement projects will be financed.

Coal-fired power plants will be removed from the so-called capacity mechanism in 2025 and will have to buy emissions on the free market. Then, each plant will have to assess how it will survive on the free market, Petkova explained.
