Can the sun and wind replace coal and oil?
, News“Wind and solar energy cannot completely replace the traditional one, first of all, because there is no possibility of storing that energy. There are no such batteries, and even if there are, it is very expensive and very environmentally dirty,” explained Viktor Martinov, rector of the Russian University for oil and gas “IM Gubkin”.
According to the professor, the reasons for the irreplaceability of gas and oil are hidden in several basic characteristics of the resource, as well as in the fact that few people thought about the damage caused to the natural environment by building wind farms and solar panels. For the 100% transition to “green” energy, the world powers will immediately have to immediately set aside 50 percent of their territory for generators, which, physically, is far from what every country can afford, reports Sputnik.
“Gas is the cleanest source of energy in this case. According to all forecasts, both companies and world energy agencies, the role of gas in the world will increase,” Martinov told Russian television “Zvezda”.
In January 2021, European countries began to empty gas storages en masse, pumping out a record 55 billion cubic meters of gas and eventually leaving enough gas in them for two weeks. After that, world gas prices rose sharply.
