China’s CMEC eyes investments in Novi Sad, TENT TPPs in Serbia

China’s CMEC is interested in investing in a gas-fired thermal power plant (TPP) in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad and in local coal-fired TPP TENT, the office of the Serbian president said on Thursday.

The Chinese company is also interested in investing into a meat processing plant in Serbia and is currently seeking partners from the food industry for the project after completing a feasibility study, the office said in a statement after Tomislav Nikolic met with CMEC officials in Belgrade.

In November 2013, Serbia signed a deal with CMEC for the construction of a new 350 MW unit at local coal miner and power producer TE-KO Kostolac.

The deal covers the second phase of the TE-KO Kostolac upgrade which will also see the expansion of the capacity of the Drmno mining basin in the complex to 12 million t annually from the current 9.0 million t. The new unit should go on stream in 2019.

TENT, Serbia’s biggest power generation complex, has a total installed capacity of 3,288 MW.

TE-KO Kostolac, located in eastern Serbia, has an installed power generation capacity of around 1,000 megawatts.
