Cooperation projects between Elektroprivreda BiH and the Chinese company endangering environment in Bosnia

Cooperation between the Chinese company and “Elektroprivreda BiH” on the project of building Block 7 of the Thermal Power Plant in Tuzla can lead to serious environmental problems. A group of engineers from China arrived in Bosnia at the beginning of August, and joint activities have intensified, which are of concern to environmentalists and the general public.

These days, the Director General of EPBiH was trying to convince the local public of the justification and cost-effectiveness of the entire project.

“Elektroprivreda” has been developing our development projects for a long time. The construction of Block 7 belonged to this generation. It is historically the most important production facility. It is a contribution to the preservation of the environment. When it is built and released in 2025, it will be the most modern of this type – Andelija said a few days ago.

And how much it will “contribute” to the preservation of the environment is best shown by the report of the European Court of Auditors, which acts as the external auditor of the European Union. The report states that one of the goals of the European Union is to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a potential candidate for membership, is jeopardizing its achievement.

The Chinese loan for the construction of Block 7 of the Tuzla Thermal Power Plant (TPP) is especially problematic, and they directly deny the allegations of the leader of “Elektroprivreda BiH”, Vijesti.ba writes.

– Chinese companies do not adhere to EU environmental standards. The “European Green Plan” is one of the priorities of the European Commission. Despite the announcement from the second forum for cooperation “One Belt, One Road” from 2019 on the realization of “open, green and clean cooperation”, energy projects in which coal is the fuel continue to be realized – the report states.

The director of the Energy Community (EEC) Secretariat, Janez Kopač, recently warned that “Elektroprivreda BiH” will always have a stain on its balance sheets from now on, especially if BiH joins the EU – then it will have to pay all illegal state aid retroactively. That would immediately, Kopač emphasizes, be the bankruptcy of “Elektroprivreda BiH”.

We should not forget the severe political consequences of Chinese influence, and in that context, the warnings of many EU analysts that behind the persistent insistence on Chinese investments lies serious international crime and corruption.
