Energy poverty: the time is now
, NewsOver the last 12 months Friends of the Earth Europe has focused more and more of our climate justice work on energy poverty – an issue at the intersection of social and environmental policy.
A package of legislative proposals that will guide energy policy all across Europe until 2030 is currently being negotiated in Brussels and will determine the level of action for EU member states for the next crucial decade to stop runaway climate change.
In their proposals decision-makers have recognised the link between social and environmental policy by including references to energy poverty, but the challenge is now moving from warm words to the action we need. This is what we have worked to achieve in 2017 and now need to see in the final package of legislation.
With up to one in four Europeans living in energy poverty, and the urgency of climate action more pressing every day: the time is now.
