Hungary: Greenpeace appeal against Paks expansion
, NGOsEnergiaklub and Greenpeace have submitted an appeal against the environmental license for expansion of Hungaryʼs Paks Nuclear Power Plant to the National Inspectorate for Environment, Nature and Water, Energiaklub told Hungarian news agency MTI today.
The two non-profit organizations said the environmental impact study serving as the basis for the license contains blatantly unlawful elements and shortcomings, while failing to answer questions such as what would happen in the event of a serious accident, where spent fuel rods would be stored in the long term, and how the plantʼs heat load would impact the wildlife of the River Danube.
Energiaklub and Greenpeace said the Natura 2000 impact estimate in the study is incorrect. They also said they believe that the thermal and radioactive stress on the Danube would violate the obligation stipulated in the EUʼs Water Framework Directive and water catchment management plans.
The organizations said the requirements specified by the authorities are often not accountable and do not clarify the duties of the license holder, MVM Paks II. Zrt.
