In Romania wind energy generators produced more electricity than coal-fired plants

Analysis of data from Romania’s energy balance for the first six months of this year shows that wind, by definition an unstable and unpredictable energy source, has provided more electricity than conventional coal-fired power plants. Thus, in the first six months of 2020, wind energy production amounted to 3,843 TWh, according to Transelekrika data. In the same period, all lignite power plants in the country produced 3,214 TWh, and coal-fired power plants 0.367 TWh. This means that the production of wind turbines exceeded the total production of all coal-fired power plants.

As a percentage, of the total electricity production, 14.8% was insured from wind, the share of lignite was 12.3% and coal-fired power plants an additional 1.4% (13.7% in total). Even more interestingly, in the first six months, except in January, renewable sources (wind plus solar energy) provided more electricity than coal-fired power plants.

The production of the Oltenia Energy Complex recorded a dramatic decline, by almost 2.4 TWh compared to the first half of 2019. Coal-fired power plants, which have a decreasing contribution, record a minus of 72 GWh. Wind in the same period recorded a slight increase, by 201 GWh, while photovoltaic energy is almost at the same level (plus 8 GWh). However, it should be borne in mind that the winter was mild, and that a coronavirus pandemic followed in the spring, which led to a sharp decrease in consumption as a consequence of the introduction of restrictive measures.

In the second half of the year, the situation will most likely not be repeated, because EC Oltenia lignite power plants supply electricity for the regulated market, ie for public consumption, in the period from July 1 to December 31, according to the decision of the energy regulator. It is a total of 1.4 TWh of electricity, which ensures, together with the electricity sold by EC Oltenia on the market, a constant operating capacity of lignite groups of over 1,000 MW, unlike in the first half of the year. After the first six months of this year, Romania is a net importer of electricity, with a net import of about 1.12 TWh – consumption is 27 TWh and domestic production 26 TWh.
