In Serbia Jadar project expected to meet high environment protection standards

Rio Tinto invites citizens and the professional public to attend meetings, which they organize regularly, such as “Open Days” in Brezjak and Loznica, as well as meetings with the local community, which will be held once a month.

The company announced on the occasion of the “Environmental Uprising on April 9 and 10” protest that it absolutely agrees with the strong position of the Serbian state authorities that the Jadar project is expected to meet the highest standards in the field of environmental protection and to respect Serbian and EU regulations. At the same time, they say that they are aware of the current events in Belgrade and that they fully understand the citizens’ concern for the environment because, as they say, they and their families breathe the same air and live in the same country as their fellow citizens protesting.

The statement states that part of the concern stems from the fact that citizens do not have enough information about the project, which, they add, is understandable since a feasibility study is currently being prepared, and that environmental impact assessment studies will provide detailed answers to citizens’ questions set at this stage.

Also, Rio Tinto notes that these studies will be part of a public debate.

“On the other hand, we want to point out that there are many untruths about our project in public. One of the claims is that the rivers Jadar, Drina and even Sava will be polluted, which is an absolute untruth. The company will only invest in a wastewater treatment plant between thirty and forty million euros, while the total investment we plan to focus on environmental protection is over one hundred million dollars, but we can expect that after the completion of conceptual and main projects, we estimate that more is needed,” said the company Rio Tinto.

“We believe that lithium has an extremely important role for the future with low carbon emissions. Also, lithium is an important resource for a number of new technologies that will enable Serbia, Europe and the world to transition to a greener and digital future,” Rio Tinto said.

Representatives of several associations and locals from the Jadar Valley today held a performance in front of the headquarters of Rio Tinto in New Belgrade.
