Increase of green energy in Serbia

Oil company NIS states that it will engage in projects that, in addition to the economic effect, also have a significant impact on the improvement of the environmental picture in Serbia. Influenced by the demand to make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change, but also to market trends that have been further accelerated by the Kovid-19 pandemic, oil companies around the world are turning to “green” energy. The primary goal is to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but also to find new sources of income due to the expectation that the market share of oil and gas in the future energy mix will be reduced.

Thus, Royal Dutch Shell should present its energy transition strategy to the public on February 11, and experts estimate that this company will primarily rely on its expertise in the electricity trade and the hydrogen and biofuel market. The company previously announced that it would increase its investments in energy with low carbon dioxide emissions to 25 percent of its capital investments by 2025.

On the other hand, Total announced investments in the largest location in France for the production of “green” hydrogen, which should reduce the emission of about 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The French company is also engaged in “green” projects with its partners in India.

When it comes to the domestic market, NIS has been implementing its “green agenda” for years. Since 2013, the company has opened small power plants at eight locations in Serbia, in which heat and electricity are produced from gas, which was previously burned on a torch. In this way, NIS started producing electricity in its plants, but also contributed to the protection of the environment. According to the company, more than 20 million euros have been invested in this program so far. Also, NIS, in cooperation with “Gazprom Energoholding”, is working on the construction of the Thermal Power Plant in Pancevo, in which electricity will also be produced from gas. The investment is worth around 180 million euros, and the commissioning is expected during the year. In addition, NIS also operates an amine plant near Elemir, where the method of gas processing is such that it completely prevents the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
