It is necessary to give up the nuclear waste disposal on Trgovska gora in Bosnia

The head of the Department for Observatory Seismology of the Sector for Seismology of the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute of RS, Snjezana Cvijic-Amuliz, mentioned that the area around Petrinja, from which Banja Luka is about 70 kilometers away, is the most seismically critical location.

“The earthquake exceeded its magnitude and now we have a much different picture. It is the zone where the strongest earthquakes in the past took place, taking into account all the data. Now we can no longer talk about a maximum of eight but nine degrees on the Mercalli scale of the most critical seismic location.” she added.

This was pointed out at the round table on the topic “Trade Mountain: the current state of seismic activities” organized by the “Green Club”, which was attended by BiH. MPs from all levels of government in BiH, experts in the field and representatives of the academic community and the non-governmental sector, as well as mayors from that area.

Munir Jahic, a long-time professor at several universities and an expert in hydraulic engineering, underlined that the construction of a landfill on Trgovska gora must be abandoned because it cannot be a spatially or communicatively suitable location.

“Imagine that at the time of the earthquake in Petrinja, a truck was transporting radionuclide waste, what would happen then. For every earthquake with a magnitude of five on the Richter scale, a location that is 70 or 80 kilometers cannot be a location for disposing of such waste,” he said.

Member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sasa Magazinovic (SDP) explained that the “Green Club” has the task of helping, not leading this process, emphasizing that the responsibility lies with BiH. institutions. He stated that in the last days before the New Year, between 146 and 265 earthquakes were recorded, depending on the data source. He also reminded that he had talked with the mayor of Petrinja Darinko Dumbovic earlier about the location when it was pointed out that it was a wrong decision and intention of Croatian institutions because they talked about the possibility of seismic changes and events which unfortunately happened in Petrinja later. He says that BiH institutions could have done more, but he assessed that the good news is the fact that something has started to be done, and today’s set of opportunities is to hear what has been done.

BiH Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Stasa Kosarac (SNSD) underlined that the only measure is to preserve the health and environment of 250,000 people living in 13 municipalities in the area. He noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs an expert opinion on Croatia’s intention to build such a landfill in order to adequately oppose the efforts of that neighboring country, but he believes that Croatia will not give up on that plan.
