Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his country will move up the closure date for coal-fired power plants from 2028 to 2025
, NewsHe called on other EU countries to speed up efforts to address climate change following a summer in which Greece saw incredibly high temperatures and wildfires that devastated forests, farms and urban areas.
The Greek government is also facing soaring energy prices.
“We have made a commitment to support electricity users in Greece,” Mitsotakis said.
“We are doing it by providing state funding but also encouraging electricity producers to absorb part of the cost increase.
Greeks will not see significant increases in electricity bills in the next three to six months,” he said.
Greek also proposed the creation of an EU-funded mechanism to to limit the impact of increasing energy costs.
“This is a real problem for Europe and it needs a European response,” Mitsotakis said.
