Lukoil Neftochim refinery in Bulgaria fined for pollution

A hydrogen sulfide release occurred during test procedures performed on one of the systems at the petrochemical complex, but did not pose a threat to the inhabitants of Burgas, Bulgarian environment minister Ivelina Vasileva said.
The Lukoil Neftochim refinery in the seaside city of Burgas in Bulgaria will be fined BGN 200,000 – 250,000 (about EUR 100,000) because it polluted the air with hydrogen sulfide.
The accident occurred during test procedures performed on one of the systems at the petrochemical complex, Bulgarian environment minister Ivelina Vasileva told BNT.
The management of the refinery had not warned the authorities about the upcoming test, she said.
The situation did not pose an immediate risk for the inhabitants of Burgas, however such conduct on the behalf of the company is inacceptable, Ivanova said.
Last Year Lukoil Neftochim was fined BGN 100,000 for an oil spill causing water and soil pollution and putting at risk nearby protected natural areas.
