One more environmental catastrophe in Serbia, spillage of fecal and poisonous waters into the fields

The unbearable stench has been spreading through the industrial settlement of Padinska Skela for several days now, and the drainage canals are full of faeces and poisonous waters. This environmental catastrophe was further aggravated when the pipe burst on the stretch from the main collector, which, in addition to fecal water, also collects industrial waste from the milk company Imlek.

The poisons spilled into Al Dahra’s field, and spread 700 to 800 meters around the pipe. It is alarming that they are threatening to spread further because PKB Vodovod is not repairing this defect. Zoran Janković, the president of the EKO-Pančevački rit association, went out on the field after the citizens’ report that arrived. “The sewer pipe of the Padinska Skela, parts of Tovilište, Kovilov, Frikom, Imlek, PKB, Al Dahra, burst, on the stretch near the First Serbian Sugar Factory Dimitrije Tucović. Fecal water spilled on a plot of ten hectares that is under corn “, says Janković. He adds that that corn probably goes in silage and to cows for food. “Cows give milk, which Al Dahra delivers to Imlek, and which then ends up with the citizens of Serbia.”

He explains that PKB and Vodovod i kanalizacija has been aware of the failure, but that he does not expect that the problem will be solved quickly.

“They brought a small excavator to fix the fault, but the plot and the canal next to the road are full of fecal water and serious mechanization is needed to fix the fault. They must first drain the water from the canal, and then replace the pipe. It is a weekend, which means that we are left to pour fecal poisonous water for five days “, says Jovanović.

He warns that the poisons will reach the groundwater, and that these poisons will end up on our tables due to the natural circular process. The EKO-Pančevacki rit association is preparing a report to the water management inspection, as well as to the environmental protection inspection in order to speed up the rehabilitation. Asked whether there is a long-term solution that would prevent the sewage from spilling into the fields, Janković pointed out that it is necessary to build a wastewater treatment system in this industrial settlement.

“All faeces and industrial waste are now being dumped directly into the Danube,” he warns.
