Greece: PPC investing 90m euros on unit environmental upgrades

The board at main power utility PPC has endorsed a plan to environmentally upgrade power station facilities in the Kozani area of Agios Dimitrios, northern Greece. The emissions-reducing work to be conducted at two units – numbered 3 and 4 – of the station, one of PPC’s most significant production plants, has a budget of 14.8 million euros. Just weeks ago, the PPC board also decided to conduct emissions-reducing work on two other units at the station, numbered 1 and 2.

The power utility is also currently staging a tender for revamp work on unit 5 at the Agios Dimitrios power station, whose budget is valued at 75 million euros. The tender’s deadline was extended to September 30, but this may be further extended by a few days.

PPC’s overall investment at its Agios Dimitrios facility, made to meet new environmental standards, exceeds 90 million euros. Besides the environmental revamp at this station, construction work is set to begin at Ptolemaida 5, PPC’s new power station in Ptolemaida, also in the country’s north. The consortium commissioned for the project submitted a required letter of guarantee last Thursday.

PPC’s upgraded facilities in the Kozani area and the new plant in Ptolemaida are expected to play key roles in the corporation’s lignite-fired electricity production over the next few years.
