SEE Region, WWF provided five million euros for the restoration of the Mura, Drava and Danube
, NewsThe World Organization for Nature Protection (WWF) provided five million euros for the revitalization of four areas in the European Amazon, i.e. for the restoration of the Mura, Drava and Danube rivers in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia.
The main theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day, which has been celebrated on February 3 since 1971, is the revitalization of rivers, this organization announced, reports Novosti.
Wetland habitats are home to as much as 40 percent of all species, as well as to more than a billion people in the world whose well-being directly depends on them, which is why, as stated, investments like this one for the European Amazon are extremely important.
“This is the only way we can face the climate and biological diversity crisis, i.e. achieve sustainable development,” world experts point out.
In the Special Nature Reserve of Upper Dunavlje, work will be done on the conversion from hybrid poplar plantations to autochthonous heterogeneous floodplain forest and research will be done on how the area will be naturally revitalized, Biznis reports.
