Serbia: Official complaint sent to EBRD on Belgrade incinerator project

The Ne Davimo Beograd (Let’s not Drown Belgrade) initiative, together with CEE Bankwatch Network, has today submitted an official complaint to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) regarding the public-private partnership for the construction of the Vinča waste incinerator in Belgrade, which is set to be approved by the bank’s Board of Directors next week on 18 September.

The EBRD’s Project Complaint Mechanism is the bank’s  accountability mechanism that has been established to assess and review complaints about Bank-financed projects that may have negative impacts on local people and the environment.

In its complaint, the Ne Davimo Beograd initiative has once again drawn attention to the fact that the construction of this incinerator is in conflict with EU policies and legislation on waste management, and will not be in line with the latest EU environmental protection standards (the recently approved Waste Incineration BREF). It will contribute to Belgrade’s already serious air pollution with carcinogenic materials.

Ne Davimo Beograd has already pointed out several times that Belgrade residents will pay more than EUR 1.15 billion over the next 30 years to incinerate waste, instead of re-using and recycling it.
