Serbia; They are shutting down the power plant, and not building a landfill?

, News

Minister of Environmental Protection Goran Trivan has misled the public by saying that the Electric Power Industry of Serbia plans to build a factory for physical and chemical processing of hazardous waste in Svilajnac, claimed the Environmental Movement Svilajnac in the Citizens Association.

Srdjan Marjanović from the ECO movement sent us an answer from the EPS director’s office, who they addressed after writing the “News” that a factory for the treatment of toxic waste could be located at the site where the thermal power plant is now located.

“The Public Enterprise Electric Power Industry of Serbia does not envisage activities related to the construction of factories for the “physical and chemical treatment of hazardous waste” at the location of the TPP Morava, or at some other location based on the draft of long-term business strategy and development of PE EPS until 2027″ – it is stated in the response of EPS.

In the ECO movement, the TPP Morava problem is a huge ash dumps which extends to 30 ha and goes to the depth of several meters, all along the river Velika Morava.

– How will this be solved, we do not know. That is why Svilajnac is one of the most endangered places in Serbia – says Marjanović.

Criminal charges

The environmental movement Svilajnac filed a criminal complaint against the unnamed person in the Municipality of Svilajnac in September last year for forgery of an official document, misuse of official position, violation of the Law on Waste Management, non-compliance with the Constitution and repression and unfounded criminal charges against activists of this movement.

It is essential that the applicants consider that, thanks to the connections in the municipal administration, Visan has obtained a license for the factory that produces rat poisons, and that it is now working on the launch of a plant for the recycling of infectious medical waste.

Let’s recall that Minister Trivan recently complained that no local self-government wants on its territory to allow the construction of a hazardous waste treatment plant. He then mentioned as a good location the place where TPP Morava is today, which according to the plan of EPS should be shut down.

From the office of the director of EPS, they assure the environmental good intentions of the largest public company in the country, but also confirm the closure of the mentioned TPP.

“Based on the draft of the long-term business strategy strategy and the development of PE EPS until 2027, it is envisaged to put out the production process of TE Morava until the end of 2023,” EPS said.

Millions for the environment

EPS claims that more than 320 million euros have been invested so far and that by 2025, another EUR 860 million will be invested in environmental projects that fulfill the local environmental regulations, harmonized with European standards.

With such an attitude of environmental protection, EPS plants will be enabled, but this does not apply to the TPP Morava, which will be shut down by the end of 2023.
