The problem of radioactive waste disposal in Croatia and Slovenia

, News

The Mayor of Novi Grad, Miroslav Drljaca, assessed the claims of the Croatian Fund for Financing Decommissioning and Disposal of Radioactive Waste from the Krsko Power Plant as unfounded that its disposal on Commerce Mountain would not endanger 300,000 inhabitants in the Una River Basin because they do not trust Croatia’s guarantees that everything will be done according to the regulations.

– Knowing that Croatia is not so technologically advanced to provide all these conditions, is the question justified who guarantees that the facility and storage of radioactive waste will be done according to all regulations? Judging by the practice of hiding so far in making decisions, we believe that it will be so in the future. We do not trust their guarantees – said Drljaca.

Drljaca believes that Croatia wants to choose a cheaper solution for the disposal of radioactive waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which is not safe for residents of Novi Grad and other municipalities in the Una River basin.

Mario Crnkovic, president of the Green Team Novi Grad Association, said he was concerned about the objectivity of the denial of the Fund for financing the decommissioning and disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel at the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant, and believes that this is more cause for concern.

According to him, to say that warehouses of this type pose no danger, insults the intelligence, and reveals the absurdities of such appearances.

– If the Fund from Croatia wants to deny anyone, they need to go to their Minister of the Environment, Tomislav Coric, who has repeatedly stated that Trade Mountain is a landfill site, means permanent disposal, not storage, which would mean temporary deposit – said Crnkovic.

He also said that it was pathetic to make a persistent repetition of phrases such as that everything would be done “in accordance with the highest world standards”, because this story lasts for 20 years, showing how they work in accordance to those standards.

– It’s high time to put an end to this, Crnkovic added.

After announcement on December 5th last year that Croatia was planning to dispose of radioactive waste on Trgovska Mountain near Novi Grad and only 900 meters from the protected area – Nature Park “Una”, which would endanger about 300,000 inhabitants in this river basin , the Fund stressed that “low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facilities do not pose any danger to the local population, provided they are built and monitored in accordance with world best practice,”.
