The Romanian government is signing a memorandum with the US on the construction of reactors 3 and 4 of Cernavoda

Romanian Minister of Economy and Energy Virgil Popescu, who is on an official visit to the United States, will sign an agreement by which the United States will be involved in the project of building reactors 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The agreement also includes financial details.

This information was announced by the American ambassador to Romania, Adrian Zuckerman.

According to the ambassador, Minister Popescu will meet with the secretary of the US Department of Energy, in order to initiate an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the overhaul of nuclear reactors and the construction of two new reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania. He adds that the $ 8 billion project will be a paradigm for future Romanian-American economic and energy development projects.

Minister Popescu will also meet with Exim Bank President Kimberly Reed and sign a Memorandum of Understanding to finance the Cernavoda nuclear project and other projects in Romania.

This is the largest funding package Romania has ever received and indicates the confidence of the United States in its long-term partner and ally, and the US-Romanian bilateral relationship has never been stronger, Ambassador Zuckerman said.

In mid-July, Romanian Prime Minister Ludovico Orban established the Strategic Coordination Committee for the implementation of the Cernavoda NPP Units 3 and 4 project. The committee is chaired by Economy Minister Virgil Popescu. The main goals of the Committee are the analysis and adoption of strategic decisions and measures necessary for the implementation of the project of blocks 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda NPP, the Government announced at the time.

The second decision revoked the decision to establish a Working Group for negotiations on the draft Intergovernmental Agreement between Romania and China on cooperation in the implementation of the reactor projects 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda NPP.

The Cernavoda nuclear power plant currently has two reactors with a capacity of 700 MW each, although it was designed to have five units and was put into commercial operation in 1996. Construction began during the communist period, with Canadian technology CANDU and Romania being the only Eastern European country to use Western nuclear technology.
