Turkey added a record high 956 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity to reach 4,718 MW in total wind capacity in 2015, according to Turkish Wind Energy Association Wind Report released on Sunday.

Turkish Wind Energy Association (TUREB) President Mustafa Serdar Ataseven said in the report that 2015 was a good year for wind installations, and added that he expects at least 1000 MW of additional installation for 2016.

According to the report, 74 percent of wind farms are located in the Aegean and Marmara regions of Turkey.

The Balikesir province in the Marmara Region saw the most installed wind capacity with 923 MW, while Izmir ranks second with 807 MW and Manisa in Western Turkey ranks third with 574 MW.

“Turkey has 61 wind farms under construction with a total of 1,868 MW,” the report read.

For the first time, unlicensed wind power was also taken into consideration. According to the report, Turkey is currently operating 10,400 MW capacity from 14 unlicensed wind projects.

Turkey’s installed wind capacity reached 2,958 MW in 2013. In 2014, the total wind capacity reached 3,762 MW and in 2015, with an additional 956 MW installation; a record high since Turkey’s first installation, the country hit 4,718 MW.
