UNESCO may be able to prevent the construction of HPP Buk Bijela in Bosnia
, NewsThe UNESCO letter appeals that Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect the international World Heritage Convention, and that the potential construction of HPP Buk Bijela must not jeopardize that.
Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect international obligations, said Minister Bisera Turkovic. According to the paper, the director of the UNESCO Center for Cultural Heritage, Mechtild Rössler, addressed the Bosnian institutions regarding additional information on the laying of the foundation stone and the construction of HPP Buk Bijela on the Drina, near Foca.
Rössler is seeking a statement, as the planned construction site is downstream of Montenegro’s Durmitor National Park.
The letter was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, and on that occasion, Turkovic also addressed the public.
“The Ministry will take measures within its competence and inform other competent institutions about the requirements of UNESCO. BiH must respect international obligations and this is another indicator that such projects cannot be realized without the consent of state institutions, “said Turkovic.
